The outcome of the project will be a new insight in modeling non-Newtonian flows in porous layers, based on an emerging approach, with experimental support. It is well known that fluid flow modeling may have very complex and cumbersome mathematical approaches. Within this proposal it is intended to provide a simple original model, based on the flow in bundle of flow tubes. This simplification allows the usage of the continuity equation in order to determine de pressure drop along the tube.

To take into account that the tubes are not straight and become more sinuous during compression, the concept of tortuosity will be used, and other empirical parameters will be found.

Extensive data relating permeability with porosity for reticulated foams and the correlation with the level of compression, will be reported.

Experimental results for the dynamic response of a porous layer imbibed with a non-Newtonian fluid, subjected to impact, will be collected and compared with the proposed models. The results could be used to determine the most effective and suitable design solutions for the theoretical and experimental models, in accordance with the applications for impact protection.
